Yoga is more than just the asanas we perform on the mat; it’s a holistic lifestyle that includes how we fuel our bodies. The ancient philosophy of Ayurveda suggests that our food should be "Sattvic" (pure, essential, natural, vital, energy-containing, clean, conscious, true, honest, wise). When we eat mindfully, we enhance the benefits of our physical practice.
Fueling the Flow
Eating a heavy meal right before yoga can make you feel sluggish and uncomfortable during twists or inversions. Instead, opt for light, nutrient-dense foods like fruits, nuts, or a smoothie about 2 hours before your session. Post-yoga, focus on protein and hydration to help your muscles recover.
Mindful Consumption
Yoga teaches us awareness. Applying this to eating means noticing the colors, textures, and flavors of our food, and recognizing our body's hunger and fullness cues. Clean eating isn't about restriction; it's about choosing foods that make you feel vibrant and alive.
